The real solution to the Ubuntu "laptop-killer" "bug"
A bunch of people mis-configured their laptops causing the disk drive to repeatedly power up and down (or more precisely, undergo a load cycle). That will eventually kill your drive. Its been filed as a bug in Ubuntu. However, this behavior does not occur by default. You have to mis-configure your system in order for this to happen.
Drupal
I recently converted our web pages to Drupal, a content management system written in PHP. In general, it is a great improvement. Users can login and manage their own content. We can have nifty features like a lab bibliography, and so on. Drupal is quite easy to use.
Brackenridge Field Lab 40th
We celebreated the 40th aniversary of the Brackenridge Field Lab last Thursday. A lot of scientists got their start working there. Congrats to Larry Gilbert who has kept it afloat for so long.
A bonus was the live performance by the Austin Lounge Lizards!
